Lion Rock at Piha on the west coast stands defiantly facing into the waves. Many people come to experience the wildness of the west coast and clamber up the slopes of Lion Rock as far as barriers permit. The broad, smooth, grey iron sand beaches attract the surfers with their boards as they look for safe places to play. This painting captures the scene as viewed from the approach road and people on the beach become tiny specks. The message in this painting comes from Psalm 18 v2: The Lord is my rock.
