On one day each year, the people of Karekare host a race day on the beach. Locals bring their horses off the farm to enjoy an outing racing each other along the beach. Karekare is a small coastal settlement on the west coast near Auckland and the Waitakere Ranges. This painting captures the exhiliration of the ride along the beach as horses not bred for such an event can stretch out and locals can enter the fun of the event. The message in the painting comes from Mark 10 v 31 and reads:  And the last shall be first.
